SHAMALI

Shamal (meaning "north") refers to the regions located to the north of Kabul, the country's capital. This region includes the fertile plains of Parwan province, known as the Shamali Valley, that surround the town of Charikar. It also includes Panjshir, Badakhshan, Mazar and other northern provinces. Because of the abundance of melt water draining down from the mountain passes, the Shamali Valley is a lush region replete with fruit trees and agriculture, making it a common weekend picnic destination for those living in Kabul.

Shamali music features Farsi poetry with local musical styles. Individual poetic and song styles exist throughout the region, with some being performed in free rhythm. Melodies are often short and catchy, and can be used again and again to set any number of verses of poetry (beit) to music. One example of Shamali music is Qarsak, literally "hand-clap", which is a type of music and folk dance that is common in Panjshir and other northern provinces. Instruments such as ghechak, dambura, zer baghali, rubab, and dholak are commonly used in the music of Shamali.

Bazgul Badakhshi - Ay Shokh

Bazgul Badakhshi (1902-2006) was a folk musician from Kishim, Badakhshan. "Ay Shokh" is a love song that alludes to the pain of being separated from one's beloved. In this video, Bazgul accompanies himself on the ghichek, a bowed spike fiddle. Also performing with Bazgul (from left to right) are musicians playing the zerbaghali, cheng (finger cymbals), and daireh.

Ay shokh sar-e zolf tura tab ke dada

Chashm-e asal mast tura khwab ke dada

Dar peshte khana ke baghcha-e anar ast

Baghbanat manam bagh tura ab ke dada

Dewana sefat ba darat ayam ba gadaye

Man dil ba tu dada-am tu dani o khudayet

O seror o qadah dar nazaram jelwa nemaye

Tarif bekonam shahr ke sham ajab safaye

Gar man che ba yadat ze rokhsar dar afshan

Tu bulbul shorida o man kawke kheraman

Az tangi farkhar barayam ba gazestan
Man dast ba dast jora shawom roy...

Akher ze feraq rokhat ay nadera mordam

Dar band ke dar ter zane ishq-e tu khordam

Dar hasrat-e didar tu jan be sepordam
Dar khana dar aye ke megom zod baraye
